Welcome at the Chair of Biogeography
“Biogeography” sounds like nature research and description, taxonomy and chorology and evokes both adventurous associations with discoveries and expeditions as well as a somewhat dusty image of collections and identification work. All this corresponds only to a limited extent to modern biogeography, which works with remote sensing data and geostatistics, with databases and molecular biological methods, without denying its botanical, zoological and geographical roots.
At the Chair of Biogeography, our research focuses on island biogeography (especially the Canary Islands, Galapagos, Madagascar, Cuba), biogeographical analysis of global and regional protected areas, the distribution of mosquitoes and associated zoonoses, forest spring flora, Central European meadow communities in climate change and many others.
