Natural fire is a global phenomenon. Each year a large amount of biomass burn on almost all continents. The requirements of a fire are oxygen, biomass and temperature.
The objective of my diploma thesis is to identify patterns in the global distribution of fire in time (frequency) and space (within major habitat types).
I want to test for patterns in and between habitat types with the help of a GIS-analysis and multivariate statistics. In the analysis process the fundamentals of fire should be considered.
The basis of this work is a 7-year MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) dataset and datasets about precipitation, biomass, topography and atmosphere.
